A striking example of early Soviet avant-garde book design and literature. This 1924 publication features a short story by Ilya Ehrenburg (1891-1967), one of the most prolific and influential Soviet writers and cultural ambassadors to Europe. His biting, cosmopolitan prose in the 1920s resonated deeply with the revolutionary artistic currents of the era. The primary collector appeal of this fragile pamphlet, however, lies in its remarkable visual presentation by Ruvim Mazel (1890-1967). Mazel was a highly talented graphic artist who received his early education in the legendary Vitebsk art school of Yehuda Pen—the same crucible that produced Marc Chagall—before studying under Nicholas Roerich in St. Petersburg and later in Munich. Mazel's cover design is a masterpiece of constructivist typography and geometric abstraction, vividly capturing the dynamic aesthetic of 1920s Russian avant-garde. The internal line illustrations further complement the modernist tone of Ehrenburg's text. While a print run of 10,000 copies was standard for the period, surviving examples of such thin, 36-page paperbacks in near-pristine condition are exceedingly rare today. This volume is a highly desirable acquisition for collectors of early Soviet graphic design, constructivism, and the Vitebsk artistic legacy.
