The first edition of a substantial Stalin-era military-historical account of the 1904-1905 siege of Port Arthur, by Colonel Aleksandr Ivanovich Sorokin -- a work that would go on to further Voenizdat printings in 1952 and 1954 and remains, decades later, a standard reference on the siege still hosted by Russia's principal military-history archive site. Drawing on an extensive body of pre-revolutionary participant memoirs, official reports, and archival material from the Central Naval Archive, which the author surveys critically in his preface, Sorokin traces the siege from the political background and outbreak of hostilities through Vice-Admiral Makarov's command, the Japanese landing on the Liaodong Peninsula, the battle for the Jinzhou position, the successive assaults on the fortress, the death of General Kondratenko, and the eventual fall of the garrison and destruction of the Port Arthur squadron. The volume is illustrated throughout and closes with ten appendices tabulating the fortress's military readiness, comparative fleet strength, garrison numbers, artillery, casualties, and supplies, together with two large folding maps: a general map of the 1904-1905 theatre of war across Manchuria, Korea, and the Yellow Sea, and a detailed plan of Port Arthur's forts, redoubts, and batteries. Of interest to collectors of the Russo-Japanese War, siege warfare, and Soviet military historiography.
