Publisher's printed paper wrappers in cream/light tan, with the title set in heavy black Georgian display type and the author's name "Sophocles" above it within red double rules; the volume number "I" beneath the title; the publisher's name "Sakhelgami" and the date "1929" at the foot of the front cover, also between red rules. Standard octavo format (approximately 145×220 mm). Print run of 2,000 copies. 
Condition good for the age and the fragile soft-wrappered format: paper wrappers somewhat browned and rubbed, with light fraying at the spine head and tail, minor edge-wear and slight chipping at the corners; interior leaves with even age-toning typical of the cheaper grade of paper used by Sakhelgami in the late 1920s; text-block firm, sewing sound, text fully legible throughout.

The first separately issued Georgian translation of Sophocles's Oedipus Rex (Oidipos mepe), published in Tiflis in 1929 as the first volume of the series "Samples of World Literature" (Msoplio lit'erat'uris nimushebi) under the imprint of Sakhelgami, the principal state publishing house of the Georgian SSR throughout the early Soviet decades. The translation and editorial apparatus, together with the prefatory essay (Ts'inasit'q'vaoba) introducing the volume's pedagogical and ideological aims, are the work of M. Abramishvili and K. Gagua, two leading figures in classical philology and literary education in Georgia at the close of the 1920s; their preface, written from the standpoint of the late-NEP cultural-educational program, explicitly positions the translation within a broader project of bringing canonical world-literary classics into Georgian-language circulation for technicums, worker-faculties (rabfak) and the new mass schools. The "Samples of World Literature" series stands as a Georgian counterpart to Maksim Gorky's celebrated Russian-language Vsemirnaya Literatura project of 1918–1924, and is a significant document of early Soviet translation policy in the national republics. The volume was issued on inexpensive paper in soft printed wrappers in a print run of 2,000 copies — a fragile format whose survival rate over nearly a century is correspondingly low, particularly outside Georgia and in pre-1936 Tiflis (rather than later Tbilisi) imprints. Of considerable interest to historians of classical reception in the Caucasus, of early Soviet translation and education policy, of Georgian literary modernism between the 1921 sovietisation of Georgia and the cultural repressions of the mid-1930s, and to collectors of pre-war Tiflis printing.
