This 1904 edition of Life and Adventures of the Naturalist Thomas Edward by Samuel Smiles is a classic example of late Imperial Russian book production from the prestigious M. O. Wolf Partnership. Samuel Smiles, a renowned Scottish author best known for his work on self-improvement and character building, tells the inspiring story of Thomas Edward, a shoemaker from Banff who dedicated his life to the study of natural history despite poverty and lack of formal education. The narrative serves as a testament to the Victorian ideals of perseverance and self-taught expertise, which were highly popular in Russia at the turn of the century. Published in St. Petersburg, this volume is presented in a magnificent publisher’s calico binding featuring ornate gold and color embossing on both the spine and the upper board, characteristic of Wolf’s high-quality editions for young adults and collectors. The book contains eight separate plates of illustrations depicting key moments in the naturalist's life and his various discoveries. While the last leaf of this copy has been trimmed within the white margin, the overall condition remains good, preserving the vibrant decorative elements of the binding and the clarity of the pre-revolutionary typography. This work remains a primary source for studying the 19th-century popularization of science and the cross-cultural exchange of educational literature between Britain and Russia during the pre-revolutionary era.
