A beautiful and poignant publication featuring previously unpublished artwork by Evgeny Charushin (1901–1965), one of the most beloved Soviet animalist painters and children's book illustrators. According to the touching preface by the naturalist writer Nikolai Sladkov, who wrote the accompanying text specifically for this edition, these drawings of a clumsy bear cub and forest birds were discovered in Charushin's archives after his passing. They were compiled into this book to ensure his final works could bring joy to a new generation of children. The large encyclopedic format perfectly showcases Charushin's signature fluffy, textural watercolor technique, capturing the innocence and movement of young animals with unparalleled warmth. Despite the large print run of 500,000 copies, finding these staple-bound "thin books" from the 1960s in such pristine, unmarked condition is increasingly difficult. This untouched copy is a wonderful addition for collectors of Soviet children's illustration, animalier art, and the enduring legacy of the Leningrad graphic school.
