An advanced Soviet university text surveying the whole landscape of general algebra by one of its leading Soviet specialists. Lev Anatolyevich Skornyakov (1924-2011) was a prominent Moscow algebraist particularly known for his contributions to the theory of lattices (structures) and later served as chief editor of the multi-volume Soviet reference work General Algebra. This monograph pursues an ambitious pedagogical aim, attempting to present at least one non-trivial theorem from each major branch of the subject: universal algebras and varieties, lattice theory and Boolean algebras, associative rings and modules including homological algebra, groups and Lie algebras and rings, field theory and Galois theory, ordered and topological algebraic systems, and category theory. Intended for graduate students, researchers, and advanced undergraduates at university mathematics and pedagogical-institute faculties, it was explicitly designed to double as preparation for the Soviet kandidat examination in mathematical logic, algebra, and number theory. Its breadth and its late-Soviet vantage point on then-current algebraic theory make it a useful reference point for historians tracing the maturation of the Moscow algebraic school in the final decade before its dispersal.
