A first edition of an early and comparatively scarce textbook by Mark Ivanovich Skanavi (1910-1997), whose name would become synonymous with Soviet mathematics education through the perennial "Sbornik zadach po matematike dlya postupayushchikh v vuzy" (Problem Book for University Applicants), first issued in 1966 and reprinted continuously for decades across the Soviet Union and post-Soviet states, remaining the standard entrance-exam preparation text to this day. The present volume, co-authored with Vladimir Zaitsev and issued the same year by the technical-education publisher Vysshaya Shkola, is a compact repetitorium covering algebra, geometry, and trigonometry for students of vocational-technical schools (PTU) and workers pursuing individual or brigade-method study, reflecting the mid-1960s Soviet emphasis on raising the mathematical qualifications of the industrial workforce. It is bibliographically significant as the direct precursor to the far more expansive and celebrated "Elementarnaya matematika" (Elementary Mathematics), which Skanavi, Zaitsev, and Ryzhkov jointly expanded and republished from 1967 onward as the standard university-preparation reference used across the USSR; the present slim 1966 edition predates and shaped that later, much larger work. Skanavi's problem sets are still cited by mathematics educators for their systematic gradation of difficulty and clarity of exposition. Copies of this particular first printing, produced for the vocational-education market rather than for general sale, are considerably less common than the later Nauka-imprint editions of "Elementarnaya matematika" that followed it.
