Khariton Vardoshvili was a twentieth-century Georgian poet whose work is recorded among the recognized figures of Georgian Soviet verse. The present volume, "Rcheuli" (Selected [Poems]), issued by the state publishing house "Sabchota Sakartvelo" in 1959, gathers a retrospective selection of his poetry and includes a photographic frontispiece portrait of the author, a format typical of Soviet-era author presentation volumes intended to introduce or consolidate a poet's standing within the national canon. The copy offered here carries particular association interest: it bears the poet's own handwritten presentation inscription on the front free endpaper, signed with his full name and dated 14 January 1960, only weeks after the book's publication, documenting a direct gift from the author. Such author-inscribed copies of individual Georgian poetry collections from the late 1950s are uncommon on the market, most surviving copies being unsigned reading or library copies from the modest print run of 3,000. The volume is of interest to collectors of Georgian Soviet literature, association and presentation copies, and mid-century Georgian book design and portraiture.
