This substantial Festschrift, issued by the Soviet Committee of Turkologists to mark the seventieth birthday of Andrei Nikolaevich Kononov, one of the towering figures of twentieth-century Turkic studies and founder of the Leningrad school of Turkology, gathers contributions from roughly forty leading Turkologists of the USSR and abroad. The volume is organized into a linguistics section, covering topics from Manchu vocalism and Turkic verbal morphology to Oghuz epic and runic Yenisei inscriptions, and a section on general questions of Turkic philology, with contributions from major scholars including N. A. Baskakov, E. R. Tenishev, S. G. Klyashtorny, K. H. Menges, and the Hungarian Turkologists Gy. Hazai and J. Németh, among many others. This particular copy carries an added layer of interest as an inscribed presentation copy from one of the contributors, Viktor Grigoryevich Guzev, a specialist in Old Anatolian and modern Turkish grammar, who gave it to a colleague within months of the book's publication.
