A monumental and foundational academic work on medieval Georgian architecture by Academician Vakhtang Beridze (1914-2000), the preeminent Georgian art historian and long-time director of the G. N. Chubinashvili Institute. This definitive study focuses on the historical region of Tao-Klardjeti (now in northeastern Turkey), which served as the crucial cultural and monastic center of the Georgian Bagrationi dynasty from the 8th to the 11th centuries. During this period, the monasteries of Tao-Klardjeti fostered a vibrant intellectual and architectural renaissance, producing remarkable domed churches and basilicas (such as Oshki, Khakhuli, and Ishkhani) that fundamentally shaped the evolution of Georgian medieval masonry and ecclesiastical design. Beridze provides an exhaustive architectural analysis, accompanied by 131 plates of meticulous measured drawings, floor plans, and photographs of the surviving ruins. Published in a limited print run of 3,000 copies, this large-format album has become an indispensable reference for Byzantinists, Caucasologists, and architectural historians. The present copy is remarkably enhanced by the author's authentic signature in red ink on the half-title page, dated August 31, 1982, in Tbilisi. Association copies signed by Beridze are highly prized by institutional archives and collectors of Caucasian antiquities, elevating this volume from a scarce reference book to a significant artifact of Georgian art history.
