This second, substantially revised edition of Aleksandre Glonti's monumental dictionary of Georgian regional dialects bears one of the most evocative titles in Kartvelian lexicography: «Sit'q'vis kona», literally "The Bouquet of the Word", a phrase consciously echoing the celebrated eighteenth-century Georgian explanatory dictionary of Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani, which bore the same name. Aleksandre Andreevich Glonti (1923–2001) was a leading Georgian philologist, dialectologist, folklorist and lexicographer of the Soviet and early post-Soviet periods, long associated with Tbilisi State University and the A. Tsereteli State University in Kutaisi, and the principal modern authority on the dialectal lexicon of the Georgian language. His "Bouquet of Words" gathers tens of thousands of dialectal lexical units drawn systematically from the eastern Georgian dialect groups (Kartli, Kakheti, Khevsureti, Pshavi, Tusheti, Mokhevian, Mtiul-Gudamaqari) and the western groups (Imeretian, Lechkhumian, Rachan, Gurian, Acharan and the periphery touching on Megrelian, Laz and Svan), each entry given with regional marking, etymological commentary where attainable, and citation drawn from folkloric and ethnographic contexts. The work is essential to historical and dialectological linguistics of Kartvelian, to comparative Caucasian linguistics, and to the practical lexicography of literary Georgian.
