This 1895 first edition is a remarkable collection of literary Orientalism by Vladimir Alexandrovich Shuf (1863–1913), a prominent poet of the Silver Age often known by his pseudonym "Borey." The text provides a deep dive into the internal logic of Crimean Tatar folklore, including the arrangement of legends such as The Tomb of Azis, Nenekedjan-Khanym, and The Wedding of Abu-Bekir. Shuf wrote these stories while living in Yalta, where he had moved for health reasons; his proximity to the Livadia Park and his direct engagement with local traditions allowed him to capture the authentic spirit of the peninsula.  As a vital primary source, this volume documents the fin-de-siècle fascination with the "Exotic South" of the Russian Empire, blending romantic prose with ethnographic detail. Shuf’s translations of Tatar songs and his preservation of regional myths—collected firsthand—position this work as a precursor to his celebrated poetic cycle, Crimean Poems. Featuring a foreword by the influential journalist Sergey Syromyatnikov (Sigma), this debut collection is a significant bibliographical rarity for collectors of Silver Age literature, Crimean history, and Russian folklore studies.
