Taras Shevchenko (1814-1861) is the founding father of modern Ukrainian literature and the central figure of Ukrainian national identity. "The Haydamaks" (1841) is his first major historical epic poem, recounting the Koliivshchyna rebellion of 1768, a massive and bloody uprising of Ukrainian Cossacks and peasants against the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in Right-Bank Ukraine. The poem centers on historical figures such as Maksym Zaliznyak and Ivan Gonta, blending monumental historical events with romantic tragedy. This specific 2003 publication is a lavish, oversized deluxe presentation edition. It features parallel texts in Ukrainian and English, utilizing the esteemed translation by Watson Kirkconnell and C. H. Andrusyshen, making it accessible to the international diaspora.
