Adolf Schmidt (1865–1918) was one of the foremost German internists of his generation, professor at the universities of Bonn, Halle, and Berlin, internationally known for his pioneering work on the physiology of digestion and on functional examination of the gastrointestinal tract — the standardized "Schmidt test diet" for stool analysis remained a clinical reference for decades. Together with his colleague Lütje he produced this comprehensive manual on the propaedeutics of internal medicine, organized around physical examination, instrumental diagnostics, and laboratory analysis of blood, urine, gastric juice, and stool, and illustrated with 185 figures and two finely chromolithographed plates of microscopic findings. The 1911 Russian edition, prepared by Dr. N. M. Shustrov with students of the Moscow Higher Women's Courses under the editorship of Dr. A. V. Nikolsky, made one of the most authoritative German textbooks on clinical diagnosis available to Russian medical students and practitioners on the eve of the First World War, and stands as a representative monument of Russian-German medical scholarship of the late imperial period.
