A widely circulated Soviet manual of practical viticulture for the home grower, written by Vasily Filippovich Savelyev, a Donetsk amateur grape-grower who, by his own account in the book's foreword, had cultivated vines on a small home plot of under two-hundredths of a hectare for thirty-seven years, achieving yields roughly eight times the regional collective- and state-farm average. First published in 1972, the book proved popular enough to warrant this expanded and corrected second edition just three years later, printed in the very large run of 100,000 copies characteristic of practical hobbyist literature aimed at the broad Soviet reading public rather than specialists. Savelyev addresses cultivar selection for the harsh Donbas climate, pruning and training methods, vegetative propagation by green and dry cuttings, accelerated-growing and long-distance transplanting techniques he developed himself, grafting and cultivar replacement, and even home wine and juice production from the amateur harvest. The book documents the grassroots spread of amateur viticulture into a region, the Donets Basin, not traditionally associated with winegrowing, driven by informal networks of enthusiasts trading cuttings and knowledge at weekend markets - a modest but genuine chapter in the popularization of viticulture across the non-traditional growing regions of the late Soviet Union.
