Sindbad-name is the twelfth-century Persian prose version by Zahiri al-Samarqandi of the cycle of the Seven Sages, a frame narrative in which a king's counsellors tell tales to save the life of his son. Composed for the Qarakhanid court in polished, rhythmic prose, the Persian text sets out its author's views on human morals, on systems of government and on religion as their chief support. The Georgian version was prepared by Amiran Lomtadze, who also supplied the introduction and notes, and was issued under the auspices of the Giorgi Tsereteli Institute of Oriental Studies of the Georgian Academy of Sciences. According to the publisher's annotation, several chapters had been rendered into Georgian in the eighteenth century by the king and scholar Teimuraz II, and this translation gives the Georgian reader the complete text for the first time. A Persian title page, printed in Persian script, faces the Georgian title page, a nod to the original language of the work. The book appeared in a print run of 45,000 copies, so it is not scarce, but a Georgian translation of a Persian classic from the Institute of Oriental Studies is of steady interest to collectors of Persian literature, the Seven Sages tradition, Georgian-Iranian cultural contacts and Soviet-era Oriental studies.
