A first-edition compilation of the pioneering ethnographic travel writings of Tedo Sakhokia (1868-1954), one of the founding figures of modern Georgian ethnography and folklore studies. Sakhokia began his fieldwork in the 1880s-1890s under the patronage of Ilia Chavchavadze, and from 1896, while working for the newspaper "Tsnobis Purtseli," undertook journeys through Guria, Achara (then recently liberated from Ottoman rule), Samurzakano, and Apkhazeti, recording customs, oral traditions, dialect vocabulary, and daily life at the close of the nineteenth century. His observations, originally serialized in the periodicals "Moambe" and "Tsnobis Purtseli" between 1897 and 1901, were gathered into this single volume only in 1950, when the author was eighty-two years old. The edition was prepared under the editorship of Giorgi Chitaia (1890-1986), founder of the Georgian school of ethnology and later founder of the Tbilisi Open-Air Museum of Ethnography (1960), lending the volume additional scholarly authority. As a firsthand ethnographic record of Georgia's western and southwestern borderlands at a pivotal historical moment, predating Soviet-era administrative and demographic transformations, the book remains a primary source for historians and ethnographers of the Caucasus, particularly for Abkhazia and Adjara.
