A well-preserved issue of Soviet Georgia's principal cultural-scholarly journal, dated to the height of the Great Terror in the Caucasus. The issue opens with a full-page pencil-style portrait of Stalin and includes further plates of Lenin and Voroshilov, together with a composite page of numerous small individual photographic portraits of contributors to Georgian cultural life. The bulk of the number is devoted to the state of Georgian dramaturgy and theatre on the eve of the Union's twentieth anniversary, with a long illustrated feature on the Marjanishvili State Theatre in Tbilisi, reproducing production photographs and portraits of its leading actors in classical and Georgian repertoire, alongside a discussion of "Othello" at the Rustaveli Theatre and other contemporary stagings. The issue closes with a detailed theatrical-historical calendar for January and February, chronicling landmark dates in Georgian and European drama, and a full roster of the journal's scholarly and artistic contributors. Physically the issue is unusually well preserved for a Soviet periodical of this date, and its content offers a densely illustrated primary source for Georgian Sovietera theatre history, published in the same year that many of the very artists and directors discussed in its pages, and in earlier numbers of the journal, were being arrested in the purges then sweeping the republic's cultural institutions.
