Rustaveli's twelfth-century romance in verse, The Knight in the Panther's Skin, was the central text of Soviet Georgian publishing, and this miniature is a pocket-sized product of the jubilee year 1966, issued for the 800th anniversary of the poet's birth. The text follows the jubilee text approved by the Jubilee Committee and was revised by Giorgi Tsereteli, Sargis Tsaishvili and Guram Kartozia, with Irakli Abashidze and Tsereteli as editors. The line drawings set into the text are by Sergo Kobuladze, reprinted from the 1937 edition, and the colophon states that the ornamental designs were drawn from ancient Georgian monuments of art. General design is credited to Elguja Berdzenishvili and Zurab Kapanadze. The volume is complete as issued: black cloth stamped in gilt, a ribbon marker, an illustrated jacket in olive and gold with mounted horsemen, and a matching slipcase with a kneeling figure and the number 800. The endpapers carry a printed hunting scene, and the book includes full-page plates and a frontispiece portrait. The colophon gives a print run of 60,000, with this batch numbered 1-20,000, so the edition is not scarce, but copies that still retain both the jacket and the slipcase are much harder to find than the bare book.
