Rustaveli's The Knight in the Panther's Skin is the national epic of Georgia and the summit of its medieval literature. Composed around the turn of the thirteenth century at the court of Queen Tamar, it runs to about sixteen hundred quatrains in the sixteen-syllable shairi metre. It tells of the Indian prince Tariel, the Arabian knight Avtandil and the princess Nestan-Darejan, weaving courtly love, loyalty between friends and the ideal of chivalric service into a single narrative. The poem was first printed in Tbilisi in 1712 under King Vakhtang VI and has appeared in countless editions since. The present volume is a jubilee edition issued by decree of the Jubilee Committee of the Government of the Georgian SSR for the 800th anniversary of the poet's birth, as it was then reckoned. Its editorial board brought together Irakli Abashidze, Aleksandre Baramidze, Pavle Ingorokva, Akaki Shanidze and Giorgi Tsereteli, leading Georgian writers and scholars of the period. The illustrations are by Sergo Kobuladze (1909-1978), painter, theatre designer, rector of the Tbilisi Academy of Arts and twice a Stalin Prize laureate, who had first illustrated the poem in the 1930s for the 1937 jubilee edition.
