A foundational text of modern model theory, translating the landmark 1963 monograph by Abraham Robinson (1918-1974), one of the twentieth century's most original mathematical logicians and the creator of non-standard analysis. Born in Waldenburg, Germany, educated at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Sorbonne, and later a professor at UCLA, Toronto, and Yale, Robinson pioneered the application of model-theoretic methods to algebra, establishing what became known as the model-theoretic approach to algebraic structures and laying groundwork that culminated shortly afterward in his invention of non-standard analysis (1966), which gave rigorous foundation to infinitesimal methods in the calculus. The present work develops the narrow predicate calculus and its semantic interpretation, algebraic concepts including embedding theorems and the transfer principle, Skolem functions and relativization, model extension, and Mal'tsev's theory of normal systems, providing one of the first systematic textbook treatments connecting mathematical logic to algebra. Edited by Alexander Taimanov, a leading Soviet model theorist, this translation made Robinson's methods accessible to the substantial Soviet school of mathematical logic and remains a significant historical document of model theory's early development as an independent discipline.
