Dmitry Pavlovich Rasseykin (1909-1973) was a leading Soviet criminalist, professor and doctor of juridical sciences who headed the Department of Criminalistics at the Saratov Law Institute from 1957 until his death and is credited as a founding figure of the "Saratov school" of Soviet forensic science, establishing its postgraduate program in criminalistics and supervising fourteen successful kandidat dissertations. A veteran who volunteered for the front in July 1941 and served as a military investigator with the 284th Rifle Division, Rasseykin devoted his postwar academic career to the investigation of violent crime. "Examination of the Crime Scene and Corpse in Murder Investigations," published here in 1967, addresses what Rasseykin and his contemporaries regarded as the most difficult and consequential of all investigative procedures: the initial on-site examination that determines the course and success of a homicide investigation. The book covers the general principles and stages of crime-scene examination, the preparatory work of the investigator, the identification and preservation of physical traces (fingerprints, footprints, tool marks, bloodstains, and firearms evidence), the external examination of the corpse with detailed anatomical reference diagrams for recording wounds and injuries, the procedural documentation of the scene, and methods for identifying unidentified remains. The following year, in 1968, Rasseykin defended his doctoral dissertation, "Current Problems in Combating Premeditated Murder," which built directly on the procedural and criminalistic issues addressed in this monograph. As a scarce, specialized publication in a modest print run of 4,000 copies, the book is of interest to historians of Soviet criminal law and forensic science and to collectors of the professional literature of Soviet criminalistics.
