A highly significant wartime publication of the classical Georgian ode "Tamariani," attributed to the late twelfth-century poet Chakhrukhadze. Composed during the absolute zenith of the Georgian Golden Age, the work is a monumental panegyric cycle dedicated to Queen Tamar, employing a unique, highly rhythmic, and complex rhyming meter subsequently named "chakhrukhaili" in the author's honor. This 1943 edition features the masterful Russian translation by Shalva Nutsubidze, a titan of Georgian philosophy and literary translation, whose renditions of classical Georgian epics successfully bridged the cultural space between the Caucasus and the broader Soviet intelligentsia. Edited by the eminent philologist Simon Kaukhchishvili, the volume was published by Tbilisi State University during the harshest conditions of the Second World War, a reality reflected in the modest, fragile paper quality and the relatively small print run of 4,800 copies. The book features a handsome dual-language title page and elegant decorative elements by the graphic artist S. Ketskhoveli. Surviving examples of academic press from the Caucasus during the 1941-1945 period are genuinely scarce on the antiquarian market, making this a highly desirable volume for collectors of medieval Georgian literature and Soviet publishing history.
