Oleg Mikhailovich Rapov (1939-2006) was a Doctor of Historical Sciences and Professor at the Faculty of History of Moscow State University, and one of the leading Soviet specialists in the social and agrarian history of Kievan Rus'. This monograph, his principal doctoral contribution, presents the first systematic treatment of the emergence, formation, and development of princely land ownership among the eastern Slavs from the Christianization of Rus' (10th century) through the eve of the Mongol invasion (first half of the 13th century). The study proceeds genealogically through all major branches of the Rurikid dynasty, tracing the territorial possessions of each dynastic line in sequence: the grandsons of Vladimir the Saint, the Polotsk princes, the Vladimirovich branch, the Izyaslavich, Svyatoslavich, Vsevolodovich, and other collateral lines, examining the formation of specific territorial principalities within the period of feudal fragmentation, the mechanisms of dynastic partition and inheritance, the mobility of princes across competing territorial claims, and the relationship of princely domain to boyar and monastic landownership. The study draws on systematic analysis of the Rus' chronicles and surviving diplomatic and legal sources. A substantial appendix provides genealogical tables tracing all dynastic branches discussed, with comprehensive name and geographical indices. Published by Moscow University Press - the main academic publisher of the leading Soviet university - and consistently cited in scholarship on the social and territorial history of Kievan Rus'.
