This 1936 edition was published as part of the massive state-led preparations for the centennial of Alexander Pushkin’s death (1837–1937). The text provides a deep dive into the internal logic of Russian Romanticism and the "Byronic" poem, including the arrangement of a gritty, folk-inspired narrative about two brothers driven to brigandage. Issued by Detizdat (the Children’s Publishing House of the Komsomol Central Committee), this volume was intended to bring Pushkin’s more dramatic and rebellious works to a young Soviet audience. The edition is distinguished by its use of classic illustrations: the academic precision of Stepan Galaktionov (1779–1854) and the evocative genre scenes of Konstantin Trutovsky (1826–1893). These illustrations bridge the gap between Pushkin’s contemporary era and the late 19th-century realist tradition.  As a vital primary source, this volume documents the 1930s ideological "appropriation" of Pushkin as a people's poet and the high artistic standards applied to mass-produced educational materials.
