This volume binds three consecutive issues of Prosveshchenie Sibiri (Enlightenment of Siberia), a monthly social-pedagogical journal issued by the Siberian Regional Publishing House as the organ of the Siberian Regional Department of Public Education. The title pages call 1927 its fifth year of publication, and a library catalogue lists it as the successor of the Siberian Pedagogical Journal of 1923. The issues were printed at the Sibkraisoyuz printing house in Novosibirsk in editions of 3,500 (January) and 4,700 copies (February and March), at 60 kopecks each. The January issue opens with M. Basov on the tempo of cultural work, reporting that the region's spending on public education rose to 19,479 thousand roubles in 1926-27 from 12,983 thousand the year before, and continues with K. Mosiyavich on universal primary schooling, school museums and the first Siberian regional research congress. February marks the centenary of Pestalozzi's death in an article by N. G. Kazansky, and carries O. Troitskaya's travel account Up the Tom and Mrass, illustrated with photographs of the old fortress wall at Kuznetsk, the small house where Dostoevsky lived there, and a Shor settlement on the Mrassu river. March includes S. Gopner on 8 March, G. Mansurov on the education of national minorities, A. Anokhin on school expeditions to the Altai, a radio engineer's talks on radio, and reports from the field, among them Egor Ityugin on schooling in Khakassia and N. Yurmazov on the Shor mountain district. Each issue follows the same sections: methods, practice and daily life, local studies, chronicle, letters and reviews. The set is useful for the social history of early Soviet education and for the regional ethnography of Siberia.
