The foundational monograph on the Besleney dialect, one of the least documented varieties of the Adyghe and Kabardian continuum, published in Nalchik in 1959 in only 300 copies. Boris Khazeshevich Balkarov, a Caucasian linguist, based it on his 1952 dissertation and on material gathered in the Besleney villages in 1948, 1949 and 1951, partly within the Caucasus Linguistic Expedition of the USSR Academy of Sciences, which worked in the Western Caucasus in 1947 to 1949. A 2013 study by Arkadiev and Lander names Balkarov's work first among the few studies of the dialect. The Besleney, once one of the powerful Adyghe tribes between the Laba and the Belaya, largely emigrated to the Ottoman Empire after the Caucasian War, and the author describes the remnant communities in Karachay-Cherkessia and in the Uspensky district of the Krasnodar territory, estimated at about six thousand people. The book moves from the history of the Besleney and of the study of the dialect through phonetics, the consonant and vowel systems and sound processes, to grammar (pronouns, numerals, the verb, declension, syntax), vocabulary, and the place of the dialect among the Adyghe dialects. Issued by the Kabardino-Balkar Book Publishers in a very small print run, it is seldom offered outside specialist libraries. This copy bears the oval stamps and inventory numbers of a Georgian institutional library, which is part of its provenance. The book is sought by Caucasologists, dialectologists, Circassian specialists, and collectors of Soviet national-republic linguistics.
