The first edition of the standard Soviet university textbook on ordinary differential equations, written by one of the twentieth century's most remarkable mathematicians. Lev Semyonovich Pontryagin lost his sight at age fourteen in a household accident and went on, largely through the aid of his mother, who read mathematical texts aloud to him and transcribed his dictated work throughout his career, to become one of the leading figures of Soviet mathematics: a founder of Pontryagin duality and Pontryagin classes in topology, and, together with his students, of the Pontryagin maximum principle, the central result of the mathematical theory of optimal control, developed in the years immediately following this book's publication. Based on lecture courses he delivered for many years at the mechanics-mathematics faculty of Moscow State University, this textbook reflects his own stated view, given in the author's foreword, that the most important and interesting applications of ordinary differential equations lie in the theory of oscillations and in the theory of automatic control, an orientation that shaped the book's selection of material and distinguished it from more traditionally organized courses. It has remained in continuous use in Russian mathematical education through numerous subsequent editions, the fourth appearing in 1974, making this first edition the origin point of one of the most widely read differential equations textbooks of the Soviet and post-Soviet era.
