Unique association copy with manuscript provenance. The title page bears the handwritten ownership signature of the prominent Georgian linguist and academician Shota Dzidziguri.
Condition good: the original paper wrappers are well-preserved, showing typical age-toning and minor edge wear; the spine is intact. The text block is firm and predominantly clean. Some pages contain working marginalia, underlining, and scholarly notes left by the owner.

A bibliographical rarity of the highest order and a profound artifact of repressed Soviet science. Evgeny Polivanov (1891–1938) was a genius polyglot, one of the founders of OPOJAZ, and among the greatest linguists of the 20th century. This 1928 monograph was his major theoretical synthesis. Polivanov's immense linguistic legacy was overshadowed by his fierce, principled opposition to Nikolai Marr’s "Japhetic theory," which had become the official state-backed dogma in Soviet linguistics. Due to his uncompromising stance, Polivanov was persecuted, arrested during the Great Purge in 1937, and executed in 1938 on fabricated charges of espionage. Following his arrest, his name was eradicated from Soviet academia, and his books were actively hunted down and destroyed by Glavlit (the censorship agency). Surviving lifetime editions of Polivanov’s works are exceptionally scarce, especially those from a tiny original print run of 1,000 copies.
This specific volume is elevated to museum-level importance by its provenance. It was acquired and signed in 1934 by Shota Dzidziguri (1911–1994), who would later become one of Georgia's most esteemed linguists. The presence of this banned book in a private scholarly library in the Caucasus, coupled with the owner's isolated working notes in the text, offers a tangible connection to the intellectual resistance during the darkest years of Soviet academia.
