A primary source publication - the first complete scholarly edition - of the Pistsovaya Kniga (cadastral land survey book) of the Kazan Uezd compiled by the surveyor Ivan Boltin in the year 7111 from the creation of the world (1602-1603 AD), under the title "Spiska s pistsovoy knigi Kazanskogo uyezdu pis'ma i mery Ivana Boltina 7111-go godu." Pistsovye knigi are the principal administrative-fiscal documents of the Muscovite state, recording in systematic form the settlements, landholdings, population, tax obligations, church and monastery properties, and the ethnic and social composition of each locality. The Kazan Uezd book of 1602-1603 is the earliest substantially complete surviving cadastre for the Middle Volga region, compiled only 50 years after the Muscovite conquest of the Kazan Khanate in 1552, and constitutes the foundational documentary source for the settlement history, agrarian structure, and multi-ethnic composition of the Kazan district at the turn of the 17th century. The text is organized by the five "roads" (dorogi) - the administrative subdivisions of the uezd: Nagayskaya, Zyureyskaya, Arskaya, Alatskaya, and Galitskaya, recording Russian, Tatar, Chuvash, Mari, and other settlements in each. The copy used is from the Central State Archive of Ancient Acts (RGADA). The text was prepared by Rafail Nikolaevich Stepanov, a researcher at the Kazan University Department of Soviet History who died before the edition was completed; the work was seen through the press posthumously by editors V.V. Aristov and Ivan Petrovich Yermolayev (1938-2017), Professor at Kazan State University and the foremost specialist in the history of medieval Kazan and the Kazan region in the 16th and 17th centuries. The publication includes Yermolayev's scholarly article on the book as a historical source, Stepanov's archaeographic study of the manuscript tradition, the full text, geographical and name indices, and a folded map of all settlements mentioned in the cadastre. Consistently cited in subsequent scholarship as "PK Ivana Boltina" (Boltin's Land Survey Book), the edition is the indispensable reference for every study of the Middle Volga region in the late 16th and early 17th centuries.
