A concise and rigorous introduction to the theory of integral equations by one of the leading figures of twentieth-century Soviet mathematics, in its revised second edition. Ivan Georgievich Petrovsky (1901-1973), renowned for his foundational contributions to partial differential equations and algebraic geometry and later rector of Moscow State University, dedicates the volume to the memory of his father, Georgiy Ivanovich Petrovsky. The lectures cover the classical theory of Fredholm and Hilbert-Schmidt integral equations, with particular depth on equations with symmetric kernels: the existence of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions is proved via a variational method credited in the text to I. M. Gelfand, alongside a discussion of the independent contributions of Hilbert and Holmgren to the same theorem. As with Petrovsky's companion volumes on ordinary and partial differential equations, the book became a standard component of Soviet university mathematical training, valued for compressing a substantial body of material into a compact, carefully argued course.
