A specialized Soviet pedagogical manual by Ivan Semenovich Petrakov, a prolific and well-regarded author of mathematics-education texts for teacher training, whose subsequent book "Matematicheskie kruzhki v 8-10 klassakh" (Mathematics Clubs in Grades 8-10, 1987) remained a standard reference for extracurricular mathematics instruction in the late Soviet period. The present work addresses a narrow but structurally important audience within the Soviet educational hierarchy: instructors at pedagogical colleges (pedagogicheskie uchilishcha) training future primary-school teachers, who required a course in algebra and the elements of mathematical analysis distinct in sequencing and emphasis from the standard secondary-school curriculum. The introduction explains that the course occupies 234 hours across the first two years of study, with the coordination of trigonometric functions and derivatives deliberately reordered relative to ordinary school practice to suit the professional needs of future teachers. The manual proceeds systematically through real numbers and sequences, limits, the derivative and its applications, trigonometric and inverse trigonometric functions, the antiderivative and integral, and exponential, logarithmic, and power functions, with sample control and independent assignments appended to each section calibrated separately for school-track and other pedagogical-college departments. As a specialized methodological manual rather than a work of general readership, its interest lies chiefly with historians of Soviet pedagogical education and collectors assembling a complete run of Petrakov's output, rather than with the broader antiquarian market.
