A first edition memoir of Shalva Nutsubidze (1888-1969), the foremost Georgian philosopher of the twentieth century, written by his daughter Ketevan Nutsubidze and covering his life from childhood through his mature scholarly career. Nutsubidze is remembered internationally chiefly for two achievements: his identification, made independently of and simultaneously with the Belgian scholar Ernest Honigmann, of the sixth-century Georgian Neoplatonist Peter the Iberian as the probable author of the Corpus Areopagiticum traditionally attributed to Dionysius the Areopagite, a thesis that reshaped scholarship on early Christian mystical theology; and his celebrated verse translation into Russian of Rustaveli's The Knight in the Panther's Skin. He also served as the founding rector of Tbilisi State University's philosophy faculty and shaped Georgian Soviet aesthetics and Renaissance studies, the latter reflected in the present volume's table of contents, which includes chapters on the Georgian Renaissance, his early years, his teachers, and his scholarly formation. Illustrated with eight photographic plates documenting Nutsubidze's life and circle, the book is a primary biographical source for the history of Georgian philosophy and Rustaveli studies, and will interest collectors of twentieth-century Georgian intellectual history.
