The first Russian-language monograph devoted to the Wiener-Hopf technique, a method for solving a specific class of integral and boundary-value equations first introduced in a 1931 joint paper by Norbert Wiener and Eberhard Hopf. Wiener, the American mathematician who went on to found cybernetics, and Hopf, later known for the Hopf bifurcation and the Cole-Hopf transformation, developed the technique to factorize functions on the complex plane in a way that converts otherwise intractable boundary-value problems into solvable ones. Ben Noble's book, translated here nine years before Wiener's death, systematized the method's application to partial differential equations arising in electromagnetic wave theory, acoustics, hydrodynamics, elasticity theory, and potential theory, drawing together research scattered across the physics and applied mathematics literature of the preceding decades. The Soviet editor's preface notes that the translated material was of most value for its detailed working-through of the technique's application to concrete diffraction and waveguide problems, an area of continuing relevance to Soviet and later Russian research in electrodynamics and acoustics, where the closely related Wiener-Hopf-Fock method remains part of the standard toolkit for solving canonical diffraction problems.
