Novaya zhizn (New Life) was the first legal Bolshevik daily newspaper, published in St Petersburg from 27 October (9 November) to 3 (16) December 1905, in the weeks of the general strike and the October Manifesto. Its editorial board included Lenin, V. A. Bazarov, A. A. Bogdanov, V. V. Borovsky, A. V. Lunacharsky, M. S. Olminsky and P. P. Rumyantsev; Maxim Gorky contributed actively and gave material help. Lenin wrote 14 articles for it, and the paper served in practice as the voice of the RSDLP in the capital. Of the 27 legal issues, 15 were confiscated by the police; the paper was closed on 2 (15) December, and a 28th number appeared illegally. This Istpart reprint, prepared by the Commission for the History of the October Revolution and the Communist Party, reproduces the full text with a preface by the veteran Bolshevik journalist Olminsky and introductory articles by Krasin, Litvinov, Gukovsky and Smitten, who had been involved in the revolutionary press of 1905. The two issues offered here cover nos. 15-28 and include Lenin's "Socialism and Anarchism" and "Socialism and Religion", Gorky's essays and contributions by Lunacharsky, together with the name and subject indexes that make the volume usable as a reference. Each issue was printed in a little over 10,000 copies, so the reprint is not rare, but copies in original wrappers, especially of the later issues, survive far less often than the text blocks. A useful source for collectors of Soviet political publishing, the history of the 1905 revolution and the early Leningrad Priboi imprint.
