A handsome mid-century Soviet edition of one of the great narrative poems of Alisher Navoi (1441-1501), the founding figure of literary Chagatai (Old Uzbek) and one of the towering poets of the Timurid Herat court under Sultan Husayn Bayqara. "Farhad and Shirin," the second poem of Navoi's Khamsa (Quintet), reworks the story previously told by Nizami Ganjavi in "Khosrow and Shirin," shifting the narrative's center of gravity from the Persian shah Khosrow to the heroic stonecutter Farhad, whom Navoi recasts as an idealized epic hero driven purely by love. This translation by Lev Penkovsky, first undertaken in the 1940s and accompanied here by the scholarly apparatus of the orientalist Yevgeny Bertels, one of the leading Soviet specialists in Central Asian and Persian literature, became the standard Russian rendering of the poem for Soviet readers. The present printing is illustrated with color plates by Leonid Feinberg, an artist known for his work illustrating classical Eastern literature, and the volume as a whole, with its Uzbek-pattern endpapers and gilt-blocked cloth binding, was produced as a prestige edition of a text central to Central Asian literary heritage, published at a moment of active Soviet promotion of the classical literatures of the Union's Turkic republics.
