Semyon Yakovlevich Nadson (1862–1887) was the most widely read Russian poet of the 1880s and early 1890s, and his single collection went through more editions in the decade after his death than the works of any other contemporary poet. His verse, suffused with civic melancholy, generational disillusionment, and a tubercular foreboding fulfilled by his death at twenty-four, gave voice to the moral exhaustion of the post-populist intelligentsia and was read in gymnasiums, student rooms, and provincial libraries throughout the Russian Empire; the first edition of 1885 was awarded the Pushkin Prize on Yakov Polonsky's nomination. After his death the rights passed to the Society for the Aid of Needy Writers and Scholars (the Literary Fund), which continued to issue Nadson's poems in steadily expanding editions, of which this 1889 ninth edition is among the earliest, opened by an extensive biographical essay and embellished with a fine photogravure portrait by Scherer, Nabholz & Co. of Moscow and a facsimile of the poet's hand.
