The first and only Russian edition of a major monograph in axiomatic set theory, presented by its translators as a direct sequel to Kuratowski and Mostowski's Set Theory, which Mir had issued in Russian three years earlier. Andrzej Mostowski (1913-1975) was among the foremost figures of the Warsaw school of logic, trained under Kuratowski, Lindenbaum, and Tarski, and is remembered today for the Mostowski collapse lemma and for foundational work in model theory and recursion theory carried out largely at the University of Warsaw, where he taught from 1946 until his death. His wartime years were marked by considerable hardship: after the German invasion he worked as an accountant while secretly continuing to teach at the underground Warsaw University, and after the 1944 Warsaw Uprising narrowly avoided deportation to a concentration camp, hiding in a hospital with the help of Polish nurses; a substantial part of his unpublished mathematical work from this period was lost. The present book gives a detailed, self-contained treatment of Paul Cohen's forcing method and its central application, the proof that the Continuum Hypothesis and the Axiom of Choice are independent of the other axioms of set theory, a result for which Cohen received the Fields Medal in 1966 and which the translators' preface situates among the decade's most significant developments in mathematical logic, alongside Cohen's own monograph and Jech's shorter treatment, both likewise translated by Mir in these years. Its appearance in Russian in 1973 forms part of a broader wave of Soviet translations bringing the post-Cohen revolution in set theory to Russian-speaking mathematicians and logic students.
