A scarce and bibliographically important first and only scholarly edition of Russian translations of the principal monuments of Albanian customary law from the Ottoman period, compiled and annotated by Yuliya Vladimirovna Ivanova, the leading Soviet and post-Soviet specialist in Albanian ethnography and Balkan customary law. Ivanova's career at the N. N. Miklukho-Maklay Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology spanned more than four decades and produced foundational work on Albanian tribal society, the Balkan institution of hospitality, and the community structures of the Ottoman Balkans. The volume publishes Russian translations of four distinct manuscript recensions of the Kanun of Leke Dukagjini - the most celebrated monument of Albanian customary law, attributed in tradition to the fifteenth-century nobleman Leke Dukagjini, an ally of Skanderbeg. The Kanun, recorded systematically only in 1913 by the Franciscan friar Shtjefen Kostantin Gjecovi and published in Shkoder in 1933, governs honour, kinship obligation, blood feud, hospitality, marriage, and property under the concept of besa. Ivanova's edition also includes additional records of customary law from other regions of Northern Albania and draws on Ottoman archival materials demonstrating the interaction of tribal law with the legal infrastructure of the empire. The responsible editor, Aleksandr Iosifovich Pershits (1923-2007), was the most authoritative Soviet theorist of customary law and primitive social institutions, lending the volume additional scholarly weight. The print run of 400 copies is exceptionally tight even by the crisis standards of early post-Soviet academic publishing, and the book is rarely found on the market. A 2015 reprint by LENAND exists, but the original Nauka/Vostochnaya literatura edition remains the preferred reference copy for specialists. Of particular interest to collectors of Balkan studies, Ottoman legal history, ethnography of the Caucasus and Near East, and post-Soviet academic publishing.
