This is the first part of a restricted-circulation training manual issued by the Military Publishing House of the Soviet Ministry of Defence for crews of the Mil Mi-4, the first Soviet mass-produced transport and assault helicopter. The Mi-4 flew in 1952, entered series production at Saratov in late 1952 and then at Kazan, and by the end of production in 1968 some 3,300 had been built, with about 700 exported to more than thirty countries. Powered by the ASh-82V radial piston engine, it served in the Soviet forces and in Warsaw Pact and many other air arms. The manual, signed to press on 9 February 1965 and printed at the Second Printing House of Voenizdat in Leningrad, is a methodical guide for instructors and pilots rather than a technical description of the machine. Its sections cover engine start-up and ground handling, hovering and low flying, take-off and landing (including autorotation), instrument flight, mountain and over-water operations, external sling loads, the AP-31 autopilot, night and group flights, emergencies, and a closing chapter on helicopter navigation, with figures and formulas throughout. The title points to a companion second part on combat use, which is not included here. Every copy carried an individual number and the notice "Not for sale"; the print run is not stated. Such service manuals were not sold, rarely left military circulation and are seldom described in bibliographies, which makes the volume a primary source for the history of Soviet rotary-wing aviation and for the training doctrine of the early 1960s. It will interest collectors of Soviet military aviation, historians of the Mi-4 and its foreign users, and modellers and museum specialists.
