A well-produced Thaw-era pocket set of Vladimir Mayakovsky (1893-1930), the central poet of the Russian avant-garde and the loudest voice of early Soviet literature. A founding Cubo-Futurist and signatory of the 1912 manifesto "A Slap in the Face of Public Taste", Mayakovsky moved from pre-revolutionary lyric hooliganism to the propaganda graphics of the ROSTA windows and the theoretical platform of LEF, and remained the dominant public performer of Soviet verse until his suicide in April 1930. His posthumous fate was itself a literary-political event: Stalin's 1935 declaration that he had been the finest talent of the Soviet epoch turned the poet into compulsory canon, a canonisation Pasternak famously described as a second death. Volume one gathers the lyric verse, from the early Futurist pieces through the celebrated later poems including "Verses on the Soviet Passport" and "Conversation with Comrade Lenin"; volume two collects the long poems, among them "A Cloud in Trousers", "About This", "Vladimir Ilyich Lenin", "Good!" and the unfinished "At the Top of My Voice". The compiler Nikolai Maslin was among the principal Soviet Mayakovsky specialists of the period, and the editorial board is notable in its own right: alongside Vera Inber and Viktor Pertsov stands Alexander Tvardovsky, then editor of Novy Mir and the pivotal figure of Thaw-era publishing. The set appeared precisely as the young platform poets of the 1960s, Yevtushenko and Voznesensky above all, were reclaiming Mayakovsky as their formal ancestor. The reader's pencil annotations in volume two, made against the Lenin poem, preserve a small trace of how that canon was actually studied.
