A beautifully illustrated edition of Dmitry Mamin-Sibiryak's classic and poignant children's tale, "Grey Neck" (Seraya sheyka), about a brave little duckling with a broken wing who is left behind to face the harsh Russian winter and a cunning fox. Published by "Detskaya literatura" in 1970, this large-format softcover is brought to life by the masterful watercolor illustrations of Georgy Nikolsky (1906–1973), a premier Soviet animalier artist. Nikolsky's fluid and emotive watercolors capture the vulnerability of the wildlife and the stark beauty of the changing seasons with remarkable sensitivity. Despite the massive print run of 600,000 copies, finding these staple-bound "thin books" from 1970 in such pristine, unmarked condition is increasingly difficult. The colors remain vibrant, and the pages are entirely free of typical children's scribbles. This copy is an excellent addition for collectors of Soviet graphic arts, nature illustration, and vintage children's literature.
