A classic regional monograph by Sergi (Sergo) Makalatia (1893-1974), the pioneering Georgian ethnographer, archaeologist, and long-time director of the Gori Historical-Ethnographic Museum (which today bears his name). Following Ekvtime Taqaishvili, Makalatia was among the first professionally trained Georgian archaeologist-ethnographers, and over the 1920s-1930s conducted the first systematic expeditions through the historic province of Samegrelo (Mingrelia), the western Georgian region rooted in ancient Colchis and Lazica-Egrisi, later consolidated as the feudal principality of Odishi under the House of Dadiani. The present work, first published in 1941 and reissued here in 1992, surveys the region's history and ethnography from antiquity through the medieval Georgian feudal monarchy and the rise and eventual decline of the Odishi principality, treating its socio-economic structure, material culture, folklore, and historical monuments, and closing with a chapter addressing the still under-researched later period of Samegrelo's history and its bearing on the present.
