The second Russian edition of a classic American textbook on the classical general theory of linear integral equations, originally published by McGraw-Hill in 1924 and covering the Fredholm and Volterra equations, their reduction to systems of linear algebraic equations, symmetric kernels and Hilbert-Schmidt theory, and applications to differential equations, the calculus of variations, and problems of mathematical physics such as heat distribution and the vibrating string. For this edition the Soviet publishers appended an original article by Alexander Osipovich Gelfond (1906-1968), one of the most celebrated Soviet number theorists, who in 1934 proved the transcendence of numbers of the form a^b for algebraic a not equal to 0 or 1 and irrational algebraic b, providing (together with Theodor Schneider's independent proof) a full solution to Hilbert's seventh problem; his constant e^π is named in his honor. The pairing of Lovitt's foundational integral-equations text with a contribution from a mathematician whose reputation rested on transcendence theory reflects the breadth of interests among the editors preparing Soviet translations of Western mathematical literature. The translator, Dmitri Abramovich Raikov, was himself a specialist in functional analysis and harmonic analysis, remembered for the Raikov theorem in the theory of group representations.
