A modest but appealing pairing of two Soviet mass-market picture books for the youngest readers, both illustrated by artists of real standing within Soviet children's book illustration. "The Wolf and the Kids" presents the classic Russian folk tale in Aleksei N. Tolstoy's widely used retelling, illustrated by Yuri Alekseevich Vasnetsov (1900-1973), one of the most celebrated and instantly recognizable figures in twentieth-century Russian children's book art. The son of a priest from Vyatka and a figure within the orbit of the Leningrad avant-garde in the 1920s, Vasnetsov developed a highly decorative style rooted in Russian folk toys, lubok prints, and peasant ornament, applying it across a long career of fairy-tale illustration that included Marshak's "English Nursery Rhymes" (1943), "Kot's House" (1947), and his own celebrated "Ladushki" collections; he received the USSR State Prize in 1971. This 1973 printing appeared in the year of the artist's death, one of countless reprintings of his enduring wolf-and-kids imagery that remains in print to this day. "Hop-Skip" gathers short nature verses for preschoolers by Mikhail Glazkov, each introducing a different animal (magpie, squirrel, hare, dolphin, seal), illustrated by Yaroslav Nikolaevich Manukhin (1925-2017), a Moscow graphic artist and member of the USSR Union of Artists from 1956 who illustrated more than fifty children's books over his career and worked extensively in the animalier genre, evident in the confident animal studies here.
