A complete three-volume set of the works of Mikhail Yuryevich Lermontov (1814-1841), the second major poet of the Russian Golden Age after Pushkin and the central figure of Russian Romanticism. A cavalry officer twice exiled to the Caucasus for politically dangerous verse, including the incendiary elegy on Pushkin's death, Lermontov died in a duel at Pyatigorsk at the age of twenty-six, having already produced the era's defining novel "A Hero of Our Time" and a body of lyric and narrative poetry that shaped Russian literature for a century afterward. This edition appeared in the celebrated Poet's Library series, founded by Maxim Gorky in 1931 as the Soviet Union's flagship critical-textual series of Russian poetry, and specifically in its compact Small Series format aimed at a broad general readership. Volume one gathers the lyric poems, prefaced by a substantial introductory study by Viktor Manuilov, one of the twentieth century's foremost Lermontov scholars and a founding figure of Soviet Lermontov textology. Volume two collects the long narrative poems, including "The Demon" and "Mtsyri", the twin pillars of Lermontov's Caucasian Romanticism.
