A significant primary source for the history of Soviet linguistics, published during the height of the institutional dominance of Nikolai Marr's Japhetic theory (Marrism). This eighth volume of the academic journal "Language and Mentality" was issued by the N. Ya. Marr Institute in 1937, edited by his leading disciple and successor, Ivan Meshchaninov. The entire volume is dedicated to the application of Marr's theories to the diverse languages of Eurasia. It features contributions from leading Soviet linguists and orientalists of the 1930s (including F. P. Filin, I. I. Meshchaninov, V. I. Abaev, I. Yu. Krachkovsky) applying the "new teaching on language" to Russian, Ukrainian, Georgian, Armenian, Semitic, Arabic, Finno-Ugric, Chinese, and Paleo-Asiatic languages. Marrism proposed that languages evolved through universal socioeconomic stages rather than genetic families, a doctrine that served as the official state dogma in Soviet linguistics until it was abruptly denounced by Joseph Stalin in 1950. Printed in a limited academic run of 2,500 copies during the perilous year of 1937, this volume is highly prized by historians of science, scholars of Soviet intellectual history, and collectors of twentieth-century linguistic literature.
