A foundational primary source for Caucasian history and ethnography. Arcangelo Lamberti was an Italian Catholic missionary of the Theatine order who resided in Samegrelo (Mingrelia) from 1633 to 1652, during the reign of the powerful Prince Levan II Dadiani. His comprehensive account, originally published in Naples in 1654 as "Relatione della Colchide, hoggi detta Mengrellia", remains one of the most detailed, accurate, and perceptive European descriptions of seventeenth-century Western Georgia, covering its political administration, economy, religion, social customs, and geography. This 1938 publication represents the second Georgian edition of Aleksandre Chqonia's translation (first published in 1911), significantly enhanced by the critical apparatus, editing, and scholarly notes of Levan Asatiani. A major highlight of this volume is the inclusion of a faithfully reproduced, large folding map of seventeenth-century Colchis/Samegrelo ("Totivs Colchidis Hodie Mengreliae..."), complete with a compass rose and topographical details. In surviving copies of this edition, the fragile folding map is very frequently torn or entirely lost.
