A specialized Soviet linguistic monograph on the Moroccan (Maghrebi) dialect of Arabic, issued in the well-regarded series "Languages of the Peoples of Asia and Africa," which since 1959 published concise scholarly surveys of Asian and African languages for linguists, historians, and students of Oriental studies. The author, Said Kyamilev, draws on fieldwork material gathered during his own stay in Morocco, and the volume was edited by Yu. N. Zavadovsky, the leading Soviet authority on Maghrebi Arabic dialectology and author of the standard reference "Arabic Dialects of the Maghreb" (1962). The book covers Moroccan Arabic phonetics and phonology, a grammatical sketch of the verb and noun systems, syntax, and a transcribed sample text with translation and glossary. Issued in a modest print run of 1,700 copies, it remains a relatively scarce Russian-language source on Maghrebi dialectology and is of interest to Arabists, dialectologists, and specialists in Moroccan and North African linguistics.
