Solomon Kubaneishvili (1901-1986), Doctor of Philology (1962), professor and one of the leading Georgian specialists in the textual history of Rustaveli's Vepkhistkaosani, worked for decades on its manuscripts (The Structural Composition of the Vepkhistkaosani Manuscripts, 1959; Variants of the Vepkhistkaosani Manuscripts, 1960) and later edited the Issues of Textology series. This is the first volume of his multi-volume history of the printing of the poem, followed by volumes on the twentieth century in 1973 and 1975. It covers the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and, according to the annotation, examines seventeen editions of the poem, establishing for each its textual features, date, print run and typographic description, and the public response it provoked. The study begins with the first printed edition, produced under King Vakhtang VI in 1712, and shows that a second printing followed only 129 years later, so that until the second half of the nineteenth century the poem largely circulated in manuscript. Kubaneishvili traces the abortive projects, the scholarly editions by Brosset and by Chubinashvili, and the later editions up to the end of the century, and adds the corrections adopted by the commission that established the text, an index of printed stanzas, an index of names, and sixteen plates of facsimile title pages. The volume appeared in 1966, the year of the Rustaveli anniversary celebrations in Georgia, in an edition of 1,500 copies. It remains a basic bibliographic reference for Rustavelology, the history of the Georgian book and Georgian printing, and is sought by libraries and by collectors of Georgian scholarship and Rustaveli editions.
